Revisit the Battle of Congaree Creek: Join Us for a New Look at Cayce's Past

CAYCE, SC – The 12,000 Year History Park Working Group led by the City of Cayce; the River Alliance; and Brockington Associates would like to invite you to view the results of the new analysis on the Battle of Congaree Creek at Cayce City Hall at 5:30 pm on October 15. The recent study was funded by the National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program.

These new conclusions are based on recent archeology and in depth historical research. The principal author, Dr. Eric Poplin of Brockington and Associates and Mr. Mike Dawson will have a “hot off the press” PowerPoint presentation that shows the results of the study. It presents a time-phased look at the battle itself and gives more detail into the events that occurred between February 14 and 15, 1865. Dr. Poplin and Mr. Dawson will present the findings for about 30 minutes and will be available afterwards for questions.

Cayce Mayor Elise Partin and the members of the Cayce City Council stated, “We are thrilled to have Dr. Poplin and Mr. Dawson here to recognize such an important moment in our city, county, state and nation’s history! These latest findings on the Battle of Congaree Creek bring with it a new appreciation for the events in history that make our great city what it is today. ”

This study is part of a wide-ranging regional effort to recognize the events of the 150th anniversary of the burning of Columbia. It sets the stage for the working group’s initiative for tours around the Congaree Creek battlefield. The tours will use the Timmerman Trail and the soon-to-be finished section of the Greenway, the “Battlefield Connection.”

This work is being completed just in time for the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Battle of Congaree Creek. Please join us at Cayce City Hall on October 15 at 5:30 pm to hear more about our exciting history!
