City of Cayce Takes Action on Mask Mandate

CAYCE, SC – Tonight, the members of Cayce City Council voted to enact Ordinance 2020-19, which mandates masks be worn in indoor places open to the general public, within the City Limits. This ordinance will become effective on Friday morning, July 10, at 6:00 AM. Individuals violating this ordinance are subject to a civil infraction and $25 fine, while businesses are subject to a $100 penalty.

City Council did not make this decision lightly and consulted with respected sources of information showing that Mandatory Mask requirements have been proven to lower the possibility of contracting COVID-19. The City will continue to utilize best practices in attempting to slow the spread of the virus and in working to protect the health and safety of its citizens and businesses.

To assist with this requirement, the City will provide free masks, while supplies last and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cayce residents can receive up to two (2) masks per person or five (5) masks per family. Residents that have the ability to purchase their own masks are encouraged to do so. Residents can make their own masks by following the CDC’s guidance on making cloth face coverings and can find additional information by visiting the CDC website.

The distribution of masks will begin on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at the Cayce City Hall drive-through window at 1800 12th Street.

An update from Elise Partin, Mayor of the City of Cayce

“The Coronavirus is a new virus. With the emphasis on new. Scientists across the world are working diligently to find out as much as they can as fast as they can. No doubt, gaps in information are hard to deal with, but there is a lot that we do know.

What we know is this virus is not dead. Contrary to what we read on social media.

What we know is this virus is not killed by drinking hot coffee or by any of the hundreds of other dangerous misinformed ideas on social media.

What we know is that there are great racial disparities in the contraction rate for the virus. It’s almost three times as high for Black Americans as white Americans and more than three times higher among Latinos than whites.

What we know is if we want kids to go to school, we need to listen to the SC State Superintendent Molly Spearman when she says: “If you want to go back to school, if you want to go to football games, if you want to cheer on your team, you need to be wearing a mask now when you're out in public.”

What we know is if we want to save lives as well as grow the economy and avoid new shutdowns, we must do the things we know that reduce transmission. Research continues to show the same three simple things: Wash our hands. Stay 6 feet away from other people. Wear a mask.

Wearing a mask, staying 6 feet apart and washing our hands means we support our economy and all those who make it run.

Wearing a mask, staying 6 feet apart and washing our hands means we care about others, which is what this City does.

Wearing a mask, staying 6 feet apart and washing our hands means we understand that we could be carrying the virus WITHOUT knowing it and without wearing a mask would spread it more easily to others.

We can do this.
